Professional Background

Joe Kodeih is a Lebanese theatre artist with over 30 years of experience as an actor, writer, director, and producer. His work focuses on acting methods, actor training, and the connection between theatre, psychology, and social expression. He has created and performed more than 30 productions, many of which toured internationally and ran for extended performances.

Academic and Teaching Experience

Joe has extensive teaching experience in both academic and artistic institutions. He has taught at IESAV – Saint Joseph University, ALBA – Balamand University, Université La Sagesse (UL), and several schools and colleges. His teaching focuses on acting techniques, movement, and self-expression, and he also delivers workshops in drama therapy and performance training.

Theatre and Creative Work

Joe is known for his original monologues and theatre productions that address social issues and cultural themes. In 2003, he became the first Arab director to stage a play Off-Broadway at La MaMa E.T.C. Theatre in New York. His work combines performance, writing, and directing, with a strong focus on independent production.

Leadership and Initiatives

In 2013, Joe founded and directed Théâtre Gemmayze in Beirut, transforming it into an active cultural space for performances and training. After its destruction in the Beirut port explosion in 2020, he led efforts to rebuild it and revive its role in the local theatre scene.

Education

Joe holds advanced degrees in theatre and psychology, including a Master’s in Drama Theory and a Master’s in Directing from IESAV – Saint Joseph University. He is also pursuing graduate studies in clinical psychology and a PhD in theatre at the Lebanese University.
